Tree Decline On The Appalachian Trail/Four Days Left To Comment On Recinding the Roadless Rule

The Appalachian Trail Conservancy’s latest newsletter has a number of interesting articles.

One of them addresses tree decline along the trail, both the extent and the causes.

It’s a sobering read, especially for those among us who love beech trees.

If you scroll down to the bottom of the newsletter, there’s a link to comment on the move to rescind the roadless rule, which has served us well for years. There are already more roads in the national forests than can be maintained, and they only create runoff and silting problems for the beautiful creeks in our area.

The article includes as link to the ATC’s analysis of the process and the likely consequences of rescinding the rule, which is quite cogent.
