Garden & Gun magazine has a fascinating article on the reintroduction of the red wolf in coastal North Carolina. I had read about this effort, but nothing in depth. The key insight is that we basically have a choice between the red wolf and the coyote, because the red wolf is the only thing that can control the coyote. As the article points out, red wolves like to stay separate from humans and their dwellings, while the coyote is very comfortable around man, even in the densest suburbs or urban settings. And not above trying to snatch the occasional poodle or child. Honestly, after reading the article, the red wolf sounds like a much better choice.
