Rain, Yellow-billed Cuckoo, Turkey

We got about 1-1/4 inch rain last evening, in a real downpour. It was welcome, because it hadn’t rained for a while, and it was getting rather dry in the woods.

We have been hearing and seeing a Yellow-billed Cuckoo for the past few weeks. They are rather quiet birds in terms of their movements, so we’ve probably not seen this bird as often as it has been around. They have a reputation of calling before a rain storm, whicch has earned them the nickname “Rain Crow,” but we haven’t observed that with the one that’s been in the yard.

The past couple of days, we’ve had three hen turkeys passing through the yard at mid-morning. I suppose that this means that they are sequestered in same-sex flocks for the winter.
