Cold for Fire & Ice, Chester’s the Magnet, The Brewery Is Talk of the Town

It’s very cold and windy this morning, and as I look out toward North Carolina, it almost looks like it’s snowing because the mist is so cold. Fire & Ice is this weekend, but cold weather doesn’t seem to deter the crowds. Let’s just say that we’re probably not going to have to worry about the ice sculptures melting.

Chester’s pulled us in again last night after work, and it’s pulling in people I’ve never seen in a bar before. In addition to a few prominent citizens who seem to be living there, I saw both the former and present school superintendent at separate tables last night, which was quite a unique experience for our town.

But the talk of the town is the Blue Ridge Brewery and owner Patrick Walker, who took his people on a four day cruise to the Bahamas last week. Needless to say, the other restaurant workers in town are somewhat envious and other people are simply amazed. We had dinner there last night and got the details from Jessie, and it seems a good time was had by all. One of my retired friends asked me if any employer had ever done anything like that for me. (I think it was one of them there rhetorical questions.) Let’s just say that Patrick has a unique approach to his business. Perhaps it’s his European perspective – it’s always amusing to watch him try to explain to folks that from the European perspective, Obama is a reactionary – but whatever it is, it seems to be working out well for him.
