Cohutta Wilderness Fire, Firefighting Team to Have Open House Tuesday

The smoke was very thick yesterday, in all areas along the highway from Ellijay to Blairsville. It was undoubtedly the worst day we’ve had in terms of smoke. As of 10 hours ago, the fire had burned over half of the total wilderness area – 19,411 of 37,030 acres. It has gone from the Jones Community west, almost to the Jacks in Murray County and Forest Service Road 68 in the south. See previous columns for more news and the link below for periodic updates from the incident management team.

The Southern Area Incident Management Gold Team is planning an Open House at the Powerhouse (2985 Old Hwy 5 Blue Ridge) for Tuesday night from 6:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M.The Open House will allow the public to find out about incident wildland fire management. All members of the local community are welcome to come and visit with us and learn about our operation and hear an update on the Rough Ridge Fire.

For those not familiar with the Powerhouse, it sits to the right of the hospital as you face the hospital, off the old highway that runs in front of the hospital, near the transfer station (dump).
